Helpful Terms for Parents

 

Decoding-the process by which readers sound out unknown or unfamiliar words

 

Fluency-the ability to read a text easily

 

Fluency Rate-the rate at which a person reads; oral reading fluency and silent reading fluency rates are often different

 

Accuracy Rate-the percentage of words that a student reads correctly

 

Frustration Reading Level-material at this level is too difficult to be read by the student, even with teacher support

 

Instructional Reading Level-material at this level can be read and understood by the student, with few vocabulary problems. Little teacher support and direction is needed. 

 

Independent Reading Level-material at this level can be read and understood by the student, with no difficulties in vocabulary or comprehension. Teacher support is not needed. 

 

Reading Comprehension-the ability to read and understand what is read

 

Reading Vocabulary-refers to the words that students can read and understand.
